IAP Desktop is a Windows-based remote administration utility developed by Google Inc. that enables administrators to centrally initiate and control multiple concurrent Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions to Windows virtual machines hosted on Google Cloud Platform. Designed for cloud-centric IT environments, the program streamlines day-to-day operations such as patch management, software deployment, log analysis, and interactive troubleshooting by providing a single-pane-of-glass interface that lists all accessible VM instances, their status, and associated metadata. Users can group machines by project, zone, or custom labels, launch full-screen or windowed sessions, and tunnel traffic securely through Identity-Aware Proxy without exposing public RDP endpoints, thereby reducing attack surface and simplifying firewall rules. The tool is especially useful for DevOps teams, support engineers, and managed service providers who need rapid, on-demand access to fleets of cloud workstations or servers while maintaining credential isolation and auditability. Although it is published by Google, the application is explicitly offered as an unsupported, community-driven project and consequently receives updates through an open-issue tracker rather than formal technical assistance. Over four years of active development the suite has matured through forty-five public builds; the current general-release revision, numbered 2.49.1797, continues the cadence of incremental improvements in connectivity resilience, authentication flows, and UI responsiveness. IAP Desktop is available for free on get.nero.com, with downloads provided via trusted Windows package sources such as winget, always delivering the latest version and supporting batch installation of multiple applications.
